Irish Society for European Law

The Irish Society for European Law is a specialist association of academic and practising lawyers and also non-lawyers, all being committed to the study and critical appraisal of European Union law, European Human Rights law and European private law.
The Society carries out its objects by holding a number of meetings every year where papers on relevant topics are presented and discussed.  The Society draws speakers from its own membership and has also attracted leading academic and practitioner speakers as well as members of the Irish and European Judiciary.  In the recent past, Judge Macken and former Advocate General Fennelly of the European Court of Justice, Judge Cooke of the European Court of First Instance and Judges Hedigan and Costa of the European Court of Human Rights have all presented papers to the Society.
The Society is the Irish representative and member of the International Fédération for European Law (FIDE).  FIDE is a pan-European organisation, similarly dedicated to the study and development of European law and establishing bonds between European lawyers. In June 2004, the Society hosted the FIDE XXI Congress in Dublin, attracting 450 delegates from 28 countries.
The work of the Society includes the publication of the Society's Journal, in conjunction with First Law, namely the Irish Journal of European Law, which is edited by Dermot Cahill of University College Dublin.  The Journal provides a permanent record of the Society's work.

Programme

Schedule of Meetings
The Society has developed an ambitious programme of meetings over recent years. The Committee's work on that programme is ongoing.  See attached Schedule for Recent Events and for future events, see Forthcoming Events.
Bi-Annual FIDE Congress, Dublin, 2004
During 2004, the Society hosted the Bi-Annual Congress of FIDE.
The Twenty-First Congress of FIDE brought together approximately 450 lawyers, judges, academics and practitioners from all over Europe.  The Society was proud to welcome delegates from all 10 May 2004 Accession States: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, Slovenia and Malta.
This first post accession Congress presented an excellent opportunity to develop particular bonds between Irish and FIDE colleagues and lawyers from the Accession States. Pre-Congress Drafts of the National Reports are available (read-only) at the Society's FIDE website www.fide2004.org. The three volumes of the Congress National Reports are available for purchase from Cambridge University Press at www.cambridge.org.
Limited preview of the volume "The Modernisation of EU Competition Law Enforcement in the European Union" may be accessed by clicking on the cover below:

The Post-Congress Conclusions Reports are published in Vol 11, Issue 2 and Vol 12, Issue 1 of the Irish Journal of European Law, the Society's Journal: see link to "Irish Journal of European Law".
